Guarantee

Our guarantee

Roof work by Watertight Worthing Roofing comes with a 10-year workmanship guarantee, given to you in writing. This page explains what that means, what it covers, and one thing it is not.

A guarantee is only worth what is written down. So ours is not a line on a van or a promise made on the doorstep: it is a written document that comes with the job. It covers our workmanship for 10 years, and no insurer stands behind it: it is not backed by insurance. We say that plainly so you know exactly what you are getting.

01

What the guarantee covers

The guarantee covers our workmanship: the way we carried out the work described in your quote. That means the fixing of tiles and slates, the bedding and mechanical fixing of ridges and hips, the dressing of lead flashings, the laying of a flat roof membrane, the fitting of gutters and roofline boards, and the other parts of the job we did with our own hands.

If a fault in that workmanship shows up within the 10 years, tell us and we will come back, look at it and put it right.

Where the full terms are

The written guarantee is given with the quote, so you can read it before you agree to the work. It sets out the details, including the steps for raising a claim and what happens to the cover if the house is sold. Where this page and the written guarantee differ, the written guarantee applies.

02

It is not backed by insurance

Some guarantees are backed by an insurance policy, which can pay out if the firm that did the work stops trading. Ours is not one of those. It is our own written commitment to stand behind our workmanship.

We would rather tell you that clearly than leave you to assume otherwise. If a guarantee with an insurer behind it matters to you, for example because a lender asks for one, raise it before you accept the quote so you can decide with all the facts.

03

Workmanship and materials are different things

Our guarantee is about how the work was done. The materials themselves, such as tiles, slates, membranes, roof windows and gutters, may carry their own warranty from the manufacturer, on that manufacturer's terms. A product warranty and a roof's working life are separate questions: lifespans depend on exposure, workmanship and maintenance, and published figures are typical ranges, not promises.

Roofs on this coast take sea gales, driving rain and salt air. The way we fix them is chosen with that in mind, including ridges and verges mechanically fixed to BS 5534 rather than held by mortar alone. Workmanship done that way is the work we are putting our name to.

04

It adds to your legal rights

The guarantee sits on top of your rights in law; it does not replace them. Section 49 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires a service to be performed with reasonable care and skill, and section 54 lets you require repeat performance where it falls short. Those rights apply whether or not a guarantee is given.

If you have a problem with work we have done, you can raise it under the guarantee, under your legal rights, or both. If you are not happy with our response, our complaints procedure explains the next steps.

05

Checking any roofer's guarantee

Whoever you choose for your roof, ask these questions before you agree to the work:

  • Is the guarantee given in writing, and can I see it before I accept the quote?
  • Does it cover workmanship, materials, or both, and for how long?
  • Is there an insurer behind it, or is it the firm's own promise?
  • How is a claim raised, and what happens to the cover on a sale?

Our answer on roofing guarantees explained goes into the different kinds in more depth, and the quote page explains how our written quote and survey photographs work.
