Question answered
Can you get a grant to replace a conservatory roof?
The short answer
A grant towards a new conservatory roof is unlikely. The national schemes concentrate on insulation and heating, not re-roofing, and none names a conservatory roof. The one council fund that can help with repairs, from Adur & Worthing Councils, reaches up to £5,000, depends on your income and is aimed at removing a serious hazard. On a low income or with a disability, ask the council.
For a new conservatory roof, a grant is the exception. A few schemes do help low-income or disabled households with insulation, heating, adaptations or serious hazards, and it pays to know which.
What the national schemes pay for
England's schemes target energy efficiency, chiefly insulation and heating. Ofgem describes the Energy Company Obligation, ECO4, as a scheme for tackling fuel poverty. It covers measures installed from 1 April 2022 and runs to 31 December 2026, and a retrofit assessment decides which measures a given home receives. The eligibility pages say nothing about repairing or replacing a roof, and eligibility for ECO4 does not in itself guarantee that any work will be installed. Applicants usually need a means-tested benefit, and tenants need the landlord's permission.
The Great British Insulation Scheme is finished. Installations had to be complete by 31 March 2026 and the eligibility checker has closed, so an advert presenting it as open deserves suspicion.
The Warm Homes Plan talks about wall and loft insulation and, again, does not mention roof repair or replacement. A conservatory roof is the cover of a separate glazed or solid room, not loft insulation, and no scheme lists it by name.
Warm Homes: Local Grant and who it is for
The Warm Homes: Local Grant is arranged and paid for through your council. GOV.UK lists wall, loft and underfloor insulation, air source heat pumps, smart controls and solar panels. Household income must usually be £36,000 a year or less, the home needs an energy performance certificate of D, E, F or G, and help only flows where your council has funding available.
Roofs do not appear on that list. If an assessor mentioned a conservatory as a source of heat loss, that is a reason to ask what the scheme can actually fund, and to get the answer in writing, rather than a promise of a new roof. Do not sign anything that implies one.
GOV.UK gives a helpline for the scheme. Use it for an eligibility check, and listen to what is offered by name. Walk away from any firm that calls a roof grant-funded, and never pay anyone to secure a place on a scheme. Official sources do not ask for money to reserve funding.

The council repair grant and disability grants
Adur & Worthing Councils offer Repair Grant Assistance of up to £5,000. Applicants need an income-related benefit, a home they have owned for a year or more, and a serious housing hazard to deal with. Disability is not a qualifying condition for this one. The council's page does not name roofs, so think of it as help with repairs that remove a serious hazard, not as a roof grant.
Disabled Facilities Grants pay for adaptations to make a home workable for a disabled person. In England the grant can reach £30,000, and the councils add that discretionary top-ups of up to a further £40,000 may be available for larger works. Think ramps, doorways and level-access showers. Roofs are not mentioned.
These are the only council routes worth a conversation, and the council's Housing Grants Team is who to contact first. The council's home improvement assistance page explains what it can help you access and how to reach the team.
What you can do when no grant fits
Without a grant, the best saving is choosing the right job. A leak that needs a new seal or a couple of panels costs a fraction of a full replacement, and our page on the lowest-cost way to replace a conservatory roof sets the options out by budget.
VAT is worth a question. The standard rate is 20 per cent. HMRC applies a zero rate to installing specified energy-saving materials in homes from 1 May 2023 to 31 March 2027, with a reduced 5 per cent rate after that, and roof insulation is among the materials. Whether any part of a conservatory roof job can be zero-rated depends on whether insulation is supplied alongside other work, so raise it when you ask for the quote and we will explain how it applies.
Our page on roof grants pulls the wider schemes together. Check the dates there, because several of these programmes close or change within a year.
How to test a scheme before you act
Go to official sources. GOV.UK and Ofgem list the national schemes and your council lists its own. A caller or door-knocker offering a free or grant-funded roof is a reason for care, not celebration. The same caution applies to rumours about conservatory law more widely; our page on the 4-year conservatory rule deals with one of them.
Put the question to the scheme, not the installer, and get any offer in writing before work starts, with the covered measures named. If a roof is not on the list, treat it as excluded until the scheme says otherwise.
Condition still matters whatever the funding. A conservatory roof that is wearing out is a maintenance fact, and the published ranges on how long a conservatory roof lasts help you plan. Budgeting early beats waiting for funding that probably will not arrive. For the full set of options see conservatory roof replacement.
Funding for a conservatory roof: two more questions
Is there a grant for a solid conservatory roof?
None of the national scheme pages name one. Insulation funding concentrates on lofts and walls. If your income is low or you are disabled, ask Adur & Worthing Councils' Housing Grants Team what applies to you, and treat an installer's promise of funding with caution.
Can a tenant or a landlord apply for help with a conservatory roof?
Warm Homes: Local Grant homes can be owned by the occupier or the landlord, but the income limit applies and roofs are not listed. ECO4 requires a tenant to have the landlord's permission. Both depend on eligibility and local funding, so ask the scheme itself.
